Meal Plan Monday #5 (Back to Basics)

So sorry I’m a day late guys! The past few days have been super busy and packed full of family and fun to celebrate Sophia’s birthday coming up!

And speaking of family and growing up…

What was your favorite recipe growing up? Back before Pinterest or Food Blogs?

The good old “Better Homes and Gardens” recipes. Or your grandmas classics?

When I think about my childhood I think about my moms meatloaf and creamy mashed potatoes with homemade gravy oozing down the sides.

Or the classic spaghetti with homemade meatballs.

Pot roast.

Pork Chops and applesauce.

Ham with scalloped potatoes.

I could go on and on.

We had a big family. And my mom never disappointed with her homecooked meals.

It was that time of the day where we could hide from the stress of the day a little and all be together.

I remember on grilled cheese night when she would stand next to the griddle for the entire night. One sandwich after the next. She’d make 10 we’d scarf them down and ask for more. But she loved it. And wouldn’t trade it for the world!

So this weeks meal plan Monday will be all about the classics, with a little help from Pinterest of course.

MONDAY:

No better way to start off the week then with this classic meatloaf recipe from McCormick.

McCormick was especially close to our hearts growing up.

My moms dad passed away when she was a teenager so none of her kids got to meet him, but she could talk about him for hours on end.

She absolutely loved her dad.

He worked for McCormick so she never settled for anything less when it came to her seasonings and spices. 🙂

Serve this up with Mashed Potatoes, Peas, Rolls and this homemade gravy.

TUESDAY:

Anyone else grow up on Pork Chops and applesauce?

My oldest sister loved applesauce with her pork chops. And for some time I always thought that was so strange.

But its one of those “don’t knock it until you try it” things.

I tried it guys, and it was soo good!

So here’s a recipe for a classic southern baked pork chop from countryrecipebook.com.

I’ll serve it up with stuffing, greens and a side of applesauce . 🙂

WEDNESDAY:

To me, nothing says childhood dinner like a nice big plate of spaghetti and homemade meatballs from dinneralovestory.com.

I used to love coming home from school and smelling the Italian spices simmering up on the stove.

Or the unbelievable smell of garlic and butter on crispy bread baking up in the oven.

Served with a side salad and Italian dressing.

It truly is one of my favorites.

THURSDAY:

Ham.

That was another one I remember as a kid.

But not your traditional spiraled easter ham. We only had that on Easter Sunday.

During the year when we did ham, mom would get Ham Steaks and we would slice red onion and tomato and grill them up with a little cheese sprinkled on top.

So yummy! And so going on the menu for this week!

Some of us would just put tomato on top, some of us just cheese. Whatever your preference, I think your family will love it!

Just grill up the ham on either side for a few minutes and then add the toppings and cook until cheese melts.

If you don’t want to cook on the grill you can do this on the stove top and then just throw it under the broiler for 30 seconds or so!

I’ll serve this with scalloped potatoes from smalltownwoman.com and green beans.

FRIDAY:

As always this will be our leftover/clean out the fridge night. This was another thing we always did when I was growing up.

Though, since we had such a big family there weren’t always many leftovers. I’m pretty sure mom would cook up a frozen pizza and fries or something to add to the leftovers when we were lacking. 🙂

SATURDAY:

My oldest has been requesting sloppy joes for some time now.

I remember having these as a kid, and it always made me think of kids in camp for some reason.

I never went to camp, but I feel like every movie I watched with kids in camp they were eating sloppy joes!

And I LOVED a good Sloppy Joe!

So Saturday we’ll enjoy some so not good for you but oh so good Sloppy joes and French Fries for dinner.

SUNDAY:

And, I think the best way to end or start the week, is with this Sunday Pot Roast from Mynameissnickerdoodle.com

This Recipe looks so easy and yummy and will bring me back to those Sunday dinners on Broadfield Drive.

The loud, chaotic ones, filled with so much love.

I’ll probably throw some potatoes and baby carrots in the mix to really take me back.

Oh, and rolls of course. I think rolls were a must have with every meal back in the day.

Then on Monday we cleanse.

Because obviously calories did not count back in the good old days! 🙂

I hope you all have another great week!

And stay warm!!! This Polar Vortex is no joke!
