June Book Review

Its book review time!!! I’m getting this review in with only hours to spare before the new month!

July goals are definitely going to be to stick to a schedule better and have a better plan for this happy place of mine.

This month my goal was to read 5 books.

I feel like four is a good number, since reading one book a week is pretty realistic. But since its the start of summer and I’m lucky enough to have a “chauffer” every weekend on the way to and from travel ball, I figured I’d be able to get in a bit more. 🙂

Sadly, my five book goal didn’t happen.

The rain pushed back some of our rec league softball games so I was forced to travel on my own with Cecilia and didn’t get the luxury of reading during the drive.

Bummer.

But four is still good. I border line hated the first book and the other three were pretty good. I wouldn’t deem any of them a favorite, but they were all entertaining.

Lot’s of mystery after the bomb of a love story I read.

I started off with a book called “The Wedding Date” by Jasmine Guillory.

I thought I remembered someone I knew giving this a great review. But after reading it I’m pretty sure I confused this book with a different one.

I just thought this book was a little too young adult.

I’ve always been a sucker for a fun little love story. So, The wedding date had me at ” stuck in an elevator” and “Agreed to be a wedding date”.

But…..

Long story short. This book felt more like a middle school/high school relationship in a sense, rather then two career driven adults.

The dialogue, to me, was just so immature. There was so much back and forth arguing over the silliest little details in the couples long distant relationship.

So many jealous and completely uncalled for moments.

It just didn’t do it for me.

In a nutshell, this book goes back and forth between the two main characters; Drew and Alexa.

They meet when the elevator they are in together breaks down. They are stuck in the elevator for long enough to share some cheese and a little conversation.

One thing leads to the next and before she knows it Alexa has agreed to be this strangers date to his best friends wedding.

It was a very very easy read, but to me it was always very very annoying to continue to read through the next argument or dilemma that these two were going to get in next.

Not one I would recommend for sure. But I’ll give it an A for effort! 😉

The next book I picked up was more of a skin crawling type of story.

“Behind Closed Doors” by B.A. Paris

This book is about a very wealthy couple, who seem to have it all together.

A couple that many view as “perfect”. But behind closed doors, their love story is nothing like what the outside world sees.

There were a lot of little twists in this book.

It was a pretty easy read for me, and when I finished I thought like I really enjoyed it.

And I say thought because, I usually try to write up my review on each book as soon as I finish it,but this month was crazy busy so I just read through all four before typing this up and when I went back to review the book, I completely forgot for a minute what it was even about.

I’ve read books that will stay with me forever, this one, I guess, did not.

While I was reading it, I was definitely into it and wanting to get to the end. But it was for sure, not a favorite of mine.

The book basically goes back to the day this couple met. A little into their love story and how they came to be.

Their wedding day. Their wedding night. And then the story about how twisted and messed up their future was about to be.

After purchasing way too many books over the past few months I decided to hit the library for the next few.

The problem with the library is that they don’t always have the books I want to read next, but I just scrolled through my Want to read list on Goodreads and ended up with two Gillian Flynn books.

The first one of her books that I read this month was “Gone Girl”

This one has a plot twist that I DID NOT see coming.

It was definitely an entertaining book, kept me wanting to read to get to the end.

“Gone Girl” is about a women, Amy, who goes missing on her 5th wedding anniversary.

It bounces back between her husband Nick, on the day of her disappearance and the days following, and her diary entries, which she started writing seven years prior,on the day that she met Nick.

Like most missing wife cases, the husband is immediately the prime suspect in the beginning.

Nick swears he didn’t have anything to do with his wife’s disappearance, but there are so many things that just don’t add up.

And his alibi is an empty beach where no one can vouch for him.

So many points lead you to believe he’s guilty but then so many points lead you to believe he’s not.

This one definitely kept me reading and wondering.

And then the big twist!

BUT I was VERY disappointed with the ending guys!!

Has anyone else read this one? I’d love to compare notes.

The last book I read this month and the second Gillian Flynn book was “Dark Places”

This book was another good mystery book.

Again it did a lot of bouncing back from past to present and several different characters, which I know some people don’t love, but I found it very easy to follow.

Dark Places is about a single mother and two of her three daughters who were brutally murdered on their farm back in 1985.

The fourth daughter, seven year old Libby, escaped through the back window and eventually placed her older brother Ben as the murderer.

The book then jumps twenty some years into the future.

Ben, still in jail for the murders. And Libby, trying to figure out how to get by after the money she received on her 18th birthday is finally depleted.

She stumbles upon a group of people who’ve formed a club whose main purpose is to free innocent people from prison.

Libby’s brother Ben is one of those people they believe to be innocent.

The book will take you back to that day and all of the events that took place, as Libby takes it upon herself to finally face that night and all of the people who may have been involved in the tragedy.

I couldn’t put this one down guys.

I really enjoyed it and was slightly happier with the ending then I was in Gillian Flynn’s “Gone Girl”.

I will say after this months reading that I’m definitely ready for a new genre of books.

I read about a lot of darkness and evil this month.

Not really what I had in mind to start the summer off, but still some ok reading.

I’m heading into a historical fiction one now, and then I’m going to try to read “Chinese Cinderella” real quick, since my daughter is required to read it for school.

As they get older I feel like its been harder for me to be incolved in their curriculm and day to day homework etc, so I’m happy to read this and have a little something to talk to her about when shes finished as well.

I hope you all are enjoying your summer so far!

Can’t believe we’re already heading into July!

Don’t Blink!
