FRUGAL FRIDAY: $0 Mini Closet Makeover

Happy Friday all!! I was hoping to have this posted earlier, but I’m getting it in before that clock strikes midnight! πŸ˜‰

I decided to try out a new “Frugal Friday” series of blog posts.

Being a one income household, means we are always looking for cheap was to live an “expensive” life!

Anyone else have serious closet dreams?!

I’ve got big goals for our little walk in.

New flooring.

Gorgeous shelving.

ROYGBIV everything!

With all of the things we have on our to do list around here, that little closet dream of mine will be put on the back burner for a loooong time.

BUT…..

I NEEDED a change right now.

Not only was our closet outdated, but it was soo cluttered!

I still have no idea how we let it get so out of control.

I mean I guess I could blame softball.

We really are always on the go and I’m always claiming I’ll get to in tomorrow.

But in reality I know there is no excuse for that clutter.

Our closet became like the houses dumping ground.

Kind of like a giant junk drawer.

If we didn’t have a place for it, we’d just toss it in the closest. Then adding to that all of the clothing. Out of season, in season, too small, too big.

Instead of going through it at nap time I just let it add up.

Every. Day.

For about the past month or so….

And this is what happened….

I can not even tell you how embarrassing it is for me to share this.

Not to mention how stressed I’ve been feeling every time we have to head out.

When you cant find your comfy jeans or your favorite shirt because of all the stuff, you’re setting yourself up for a mental breakdown.

So I finally decided to do something about it.

I woke up this morning, thinking I’d run to The Container Store. I’d give myself a small(ish) budget. New hangers. Matching storage containers.

But then I got to thinking.

I don’t want to spend a dime on it.

So, I decided to just get to work.

Empty EVERYTHING out of the closet.

This looks way worse then it is guys! But it really was bad. SO. MUCH. STUFF.

Sort through and find only the white hangers.

PURGE.

Which is really hard for me to do. I would start to throw something into the donate pile and then talk myself out of it in an instant. I did get rid of a few things though.

And just a little tip. It does help if you just put everything in a box/bag and store it somewhere for a few months, instead of just donating right away. It just gives you a little piece of mind that you didn’t actually get rid of them.

Then, if several months pass and you didn’t miss the items, load them up to donate. πŸ™‚

Then I gathered all of the unused baskets, containers, etc.

Dust and vacuum.

Paint (that little wall in the back took me 2 minutes tops!) Nothing fancy, nothing special. No measuring. No straight lines. Just some random brush strokes with my daughters leftover craft paint.

I asked my girls to help me by covering the shelves with contact paper I had leftover.

Rolled up all of hubby’s T-shirts so they were easy to access and see.

And did the same with his ties!

Then, little by little I just started adding things back in.

Its not the closet of my dreams. YET.

But, its making me happy for now, while I continue to work towards my life goals.

I also hung this sign in there as a good daily reminder. πŸ™‚

The entire process took me about 3 hours, and that included my many many “Mom!! Come here!” breaks.

It really was such a simple transformation, that made a big difference for us!

I hope you all have an AMAZING weekend!!

We’re heading off to the fields again tomorrow morning, so I’m off to pack all of the things for my unbelievably patient four year old. He had a rough time last weekend, but for the most part he really is so good for me during these super hot super looong tournament days!
