Good Morning!!! I’m coming at ya with a better late then never book review for the year so far. And I’ve got two for you….just two!! I’m so bummed, but life (and my brain) has been a whirlwind of crazy lately and reading just wasn’t happening.
But I did read two very good but VERY different books so far.
In January I finally sat down and read “The tattooist of Auschwitz” and though I had a bit of a tough time getting started with it, I’m so glad I stuck it out and read this one.
It was so good!
A great story about living out the hand you’ve been dealt to the absolute fullest. And never giving up hope.
I can not even begin to imagine what the lives of so many of these innocent people during WWII had to have been like.
The fear, the hunger, the pain, the unknown. Just awful. I don’t think anyone will ever be able to fully understand the devastation that this time period brought for so many.
But when I read the stories of these men and women, who endured so much but still came out on top. Men and women who were tortured and starved and forced into awful situations, but never stopped hoping for tomorrow. I don’t know, it just makes me feel some sort of way.
This book was a story based on the real life experiences of Ludwig ” Lali ” Sokolov, a holocaust survivor. The story is about him and the life he gave up in hopes to save his family at the very beginning of the war. His decisions once he got to the camps to help others while also trying to look out for himself. The job he took on that came with many perks, making him often times feel guilty and shameful. It’s a story of finding love in the most difficult place and holding on to that small thread of hope that the future would be better.
The story takes you through his days in camp and the people he met along the way. It was sometimes hard to read, really trying to visualize just what these people went through, but it really does put things in perspective.
There is another book about one of the other characters from The Tattooist, called “Cilka’s Journey” and I’m hoping to read that one this month, I’ve heard great things about that one too.
I started to read another book in January and then lost it. 🙁
Like physically lost the entire book. haha I was having such a hard time getting into it though so I was kind of happy to take a break from that one. I am very eager to get back to it (found it hidden in one of my bags that I don’t often carry) I just needed something light to get through first.
So in February I read “What Alice Forgot”. I forgot where I first saw this one, but I had heard some pretty good reviews on it, and saw that it was a pretty easy read so I jumped right into it.
What Alice Forgot, is a somewhat silly book about a women who falls off of her spin class bike one afternoon and wakes up thinking she’s a twenty something, pregnant with her first child and rennovating her newly purchased home. When in reality, she’s months away from her 40th birthday, not pregnant at all, and in the middle of an ugly divorce.
The book takes you through the first week after her accident, where she struggles to regain memory of the last ten years of her life.
So much has happened. So many good and bad life experiences, and she can’t place a single one of them.
It was fun while also spending time addressing real life feelings and events. It really was one of those books that just make you think.
Are the little things really worth the fight? If we could go back, would we?
I really enjoyed this book.
It was definitely a quick easy read, that I would recommend.
So there ya have it folks.
TWO.
I am so disappointed right now….BUT I’ve got some good ones lined up for March so I’m looking forward to getting through them and just getting right back on task!
