In April of this year we decided to put our house on the market. We were bursting at the seams, and although we had amazing neighbors and so many memories in that house, we just knew we needed something slightly bigger. So the FOR SALE sign went up and 4 days later we were under contract.
We were shocked at how fast it sold! And not ready AT ALL to make an offer on another house yet. We wanted to be sure that it was the perfect fit for our family, and we were trying to move into a very specific area due to schooling so we knew it was going to be a challenge.
Luckily my In-Laws are SAINTS and allowed us to stay with them while we were on the hunt. Little did any of us know the search would end up taking 3 months!
But we FINALLY found a house that we knew could be the perfect fit.
So on August 30th we settled into our new home. 🙂
Luckily for us we didn’t have to rush all of our things over since we had a good bit of stuff at my in-laws house. We could gradually move in over the course of that weekend. But I put together a list of the essentials I felt needed to come with me on day one!
Things like Cleaning supplies. Because I don’t care how clean you think the house is that you are moving into, there are soo many little spots that most people don’t think to clean. Like in our case, the light switches, washing machine, deep inside the cabinets……
Candles and air Freshners. I think for me, one of the things that help make a new house feel like home is the smell. When your house smells like someone elses house it will never feel like your home. So one of the first things I did when I got there was light several of my favorite scented candles which in my case is this Watermelon Lemonade scent from Bath and Body Works. I also love using the wall flowers from Bath and Body Works. I think it will still take a little while for your new house to really smell like home but this is definitely a good start!

Toilet Paper and Paper towels! Because even if you are not going to be staying in the house on the first night you’ll definitely be needing the paper products throughout the first day getting ready for the big move in.
Pizza Cash. I had an envelope set aside with cash for pizza. It sounds like such a simple thing, but it was so much simpler when everyone started to get hungry to just make the quick call and have the cash ready near the door. No stopping to scramble for your debit card or find enough cash to cover.
Move in Day can be soo stressful! But if you start your day with this box it will be so much more enjoyable! Here is my complete list of move in day essentials to help make your new house feel like home! 🙂

This list is just what worked best for me! And I added a few things to the list that I didn’t personally have on hand. I learned a lot from my first experience with a big move! Like the Vinegar and Baking Soda for the washing machine! I was so grossed out at the thought of using someone elses washing machine. ESPECIALLY after starting to clean it and realizing how dirty those things really can get! Unfortunately after such a big purchase and a million other things on our list it just wasn’t in the cards for us to buy a new one yet. Thank God for a great friend who helped me clean out all the crack and crevasses of the washing machine and discovering the vinegar and baking soda tip for letting it soak and clean!
WASHING MACHINE CLEANING TIP: Fill Washing Machine with water set to the hottest temp. Pour one cup white vinegar and one cup baking soda into hot water and let sit for an hour. Then run cycle as normal. I also ran another hot water cycle with laundry detergent just to be safe!
We are still slowly moving in.
One thing at a time.
We Got in JUST in time for the kids to start school. Some of us are still sleeping on just mattresses, but HEY the house is clean! 😉
Can’t wait to share all of our new home projects with you all!!
Enjoy your Sunday!
