New Year 2019

Happy 2019!!!

Can someone please pinch me? It just doesn’t seem real, that we are already in 2019. I remember as a kid making comments about how there would probably be flying cars by 2020 because it just seemed soooo far away. And now here we are, a year away from it.

It really is just hard to wrap my head around that. But if I’ve learned anything from my 32 years on this earth, its that you should live every single to day to its fullest potential. We all only have so many, and non of us know exactly how many we have, so make 2019 a year where you do just that! Live every single day to its absolute fullest potential!

This year, I urge you to dance it the rain, sing at the top of your lungs, take that trip you’ve been so hesitant to take, make the career change if you just aren’t happy, play with your kids, let your guard down, forgive that person you’ve just really been having a hard time forgiving, let go of all grudges and past debts owed to you, take a deep breath and start new! Make today the beginning of the rest of your life. Let go of all those past failed new year resolutions and really begin today to set goals and work your ass off until you reach them! You got this!

So I saw a post yesterday that I thought at first was just a funny meme. It mentioned something about not doing wash on New years day because you could wash away a member of your family (they die), you could wash away good fortune, and because you did laundry on New Years Day, you are destined for a year of back breaking work. I thought it was a joke, but it actually is one of the many New Year superstitions! It originated in Tennessee.

So No laundry being done here today!

After seeing that I Thought it would be fun to look around at some of the other New Year superstitions and traditions around the world and share some of them with you all! The thought behind it is that whatever you do on New Years day will basically be how your whole year unfolds, ie: sweep you sweep away the good wealth, wash you wash away the good wealth etc.

So to go along with the superstition of laundry, here are a few other household chores that many stay away from on this day! I’m not usually a superstitious person, but if it means not doing house chores for a day, I will gladly err on the side of caution. πŸ˜‰

In Hawaii they advice you not to sweep.

Farmers in Germany think that if the stables get a good cleaning between Christmas Eve and New Years day then the livestock will be protected from witches. This one is a bit far fetched, but hey, I totally live by the you do you motto!

And I’m hoping for your sake you haven’t knitted, sewn or done the families laundry between Christmas day and today, because according to my research, if you have, you are doomed.

Apparently at the stroke of midnight on New Years Day you are supposed to open all windows in your home and let out the old year.

And rumor has it that the first person to enter your home in the New Year will have a huge influence on the year you are about to have. They suggest that he should be tall, dark haired, and good looking so if anyone would like to borrow Mike for a day to welcome as your first guest of the new year , just let me know! πŸ˜‰

And please, make sure you do not remove any items from your home on New Years Day, not a thing!

So if you hosted that New Years Eve Party last night, just sit back and stare at that trash, because taking it outside could serve you a great injustice for this coming year!

Any New Year birthdays in the house?!

Apparently being born on the first day of a new year makes your extremely fortunate and lucky and will bring good fortune and luck to the family you were born into!

There are also a few superstitions on what you should be eating on New Years Day. Certain foods are said to bring good luck for the new year. My mom has always been a pork and sauerkraut kind of girl in the new year. This is a tradition the Pennsylvania Dutch started, they believe that you should eat smoked sausage to keep yourself healthy, boiled cabbage to bring good luck and the pork and sauerkraut for overall good health, wellness and happiness!

Black eyed peas are said to bring good fortune in the south.

And a fun Spanish tradition believes that you should eat 12 grapes at midnight on New Years Eve. Each of the twelve grapes will symbolize a month. If the grape is sweet it means that that month will also be sweet and bring good things, if a grape is sour that you know which months to expect to be a little more difficult.

Don’t break anything today! Because that could symbolize a destructive year.

Don’t pay any bills today, it could mean many more bills to come during the new year! Save those bills for tomorrow!

It is also suggested that you do something related to work today and be successful at it, however don’t over work or do too big of a task. The idea is that if you work and are successful then it will bring that luck to your career this year but if you over do it your work will be exhausting in the coming year, and I think we can all agree that hard work is great, but overwork can be toxic to many things in your life.

So many superstitions, So many beliefs around the world! Its kind of fun to take a look into the traditions of other cultures and beliefs.

For me today, I plan on taking it easy. I’ll send Mike out and around the front so he can be the first person to cross the threshold in our house, finish off the last 12 grapes in the fridge, stare at the overflowing trash can, and let the laundry sit for just one more day. Sounds like a grand plan if you ask me. πŸ™‚

Because in my opinion, though i’m really not all that superstitious, you never really can be too safe. πŸ˜‰

I hope you all have the most amazing start to this new year!

Enjoy your babies

love on your spouses

call your mom!

Be happy.

Be well.

Be safe.

And if your feeling like it, be Superstitious.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
