I had big book goals for the month of March but life got in the way and I only ended up reading three.
And that was by the skin of my teeth.
Its March 31st and I am JUST now finishing up my third book and writing up this quick review for you all.
I was bound and determined, I’ll tell you that much.
I can’t tell you how many times I got the “eye” from Mike giving me that “What the hell are you still sitting there for” look, “There’s so much to be done around here.” But, come one, we all know finishing up a good book is wayyy more important then tending to that monterous tower of laundry, or showering, or feeding the kids….ok maybe not that last one.. but you catch my drift.
The first book I read this month was “Big Sexy Love” by Kirsty Greenwood.
This book was such a fun light read for me.
It was just such a silly book but at the same time was a really cute, feel good book with a little bit of sad and real life feels mixed in.
If that makes any sense…
Big Sexy Love is about two best Friends.
Birdie, who is from America, very extroverted, confidant and ironically “full of life” even though she is literally on her death bed suffering from Heart Failure at a super young age.
And Olive who is from England, introverted, living a very mundane life day in and day out even though she’s got the entire world as her oyster.
One day Birdie gives Olive her last dying wish. Which is for Olive to fly to NYC to track down Birdies first true love and give him a letter she wrote to him.
She tells Olive that this man was her “Big Sexy Love” That one love that everyone should be lucky enough to experience in their lifetime.
But Birdie is not happy with the way things ended with them. She says its imperative that he gets this letter before she passes and she asks Olive, who has never strayed more then a few miles from home, to deliver this letter to him, in person, thousands of miles away in a completely different country.
Olive is mortified, but wants nothing more then to grant her best friend her one and only dying wish.
The book takes you through the hilariously funny and totally off the wall experience that Olive has on her trip.
There are twists and turns that you wont see coming.
And an amazing story of true love that’s not too sappy and annoying 😉
I would definitely recommend giving this book a read.
Next, I decided to read “The Handmaids Tale”, since I had just finished up the series.
Normally I like reading a book first before watching the movies but in this case I didn’t even know the book existed.
I had seen, for months people talking about the handmaids tale on Hulu, so last month I decided to check it out.
It was NOTHING at all what I was expecting.
I honestly don’t even really know what I was expecting but this was not it.
It was disturbing, sometimes hard to watch, completely messed up and wrong on so many levels.
But the acting was FANTASTIC and the writing was brilliant, disturbing or not, so I had to check it out.
Then I heard that it was all derived from a book so I bought it.
And in this case I’m glad I watched the show first.
The book, for some reason, was very hard for me to follow at first. I think the Author just had a very old fashioned way of writing that I’m not really used to reading. But since I already knew the basis of the storyline I was able to get through it.
It did explain things a bit differently then the series. Sometimes better then the series.
The Handmaids Tale is about a group of Corpupt leaders who take over the Government.
Completely wipe out the constitution and basically all human rights.
Infertility is at a detrimental high, so these leaders capture and hold, against their will, the women who are able to still conceive, forcing them to carry the babies of the wealthy and well known leaders of their new democracy.
The story follows the experience of one of the specific “Hand Maids” and her fight to sanity. Her hope for a better future and her desire to escape this awful nightmare of a “life”.
It is definitely not for the faint of heart.
Parts of me wish I could un-see or un-read, but it truly is a well written story regardless of how messed up it is.
And last, I just had to read “Girl, Stop Apologizing” by Rachel Hollis, because everyone needs to be told that they CAN do ANYTHING they put there minds too.
There are many priorities that Rachel Hollis and I would 100% disagree on.
But that is one of the things she makes very clear in her books. We are all completely different, with different goals and opinions. With different political or religious beliefs. With different priorites and hopes for life.
We are ALL different.
But yet we are all the same. In that, we all have goals. We all have dreams. We all have wishes. We all have opinions. And regardless of what your best friend goals, dreams, wishes and opinons are. Or your moms goals, dreams wishes and opinions are. You have every right to own YOURS! But you have to do just that. You have to OWN them!
You have to wake up with fire in your heart and confidence in yourself that you CAN.
Rachel Hollis has a way with words and, in my opinion, can really help give you a little of that fire in your heart and confidence that you need to get it done.
I think she gives examples in her book of things that nearly everyone should be able to relate to in some way.
And some great tips on what really worked for her to push her past her limits and in the direction of every goal and dream she has set for herself.
And I think it is definitely worth the read!
I have a huge list of books on my want to read list for April but I’m so torn on what to start with! I would LOVE some more recommendations to keep me going!
