Walmart Grocery Pickup has been around for a little while now.
I hopped on the train about 2 months ago.
Grocery budgeting has always been a challenge for me. I come from a family with 5 children and 2 adults. There was always so much food at the table, but my mom would always joke “He who eats the fastest gets the mostest”. We took that joke quite literally and we all picked up some pretty massive eating habits, which, for me, resulted in the upwards of $1000/month at the grocery store! This is absolutely insane and not necessary!
But no matter how hard I tried to meal plan, and budget. No matter how many lists I wrote and tried to follow. I was ALWAYS going over budget at the register, OR heading back to the store a few days later to buy the things I said no too the first time around.
I knew this had to stop. The thought of literally working JUST to feed our families is just so wrong. But that was pretty much what we were doing.
Last year I stumbled upon Jordan Page from Funcheaporfree.com
The woman is a GENIUS!!
At first I just thought she was crazy, but soon discovered she just enjoys her money to be spent on quality time or saved for the future, instead of spending it ALL at the grocery store.
Her theory is that you should only spend $100/month per person in your family. So for me, that would be $500! I didn’t think it would be possible at all. Especially not with my husband on a pescatarian diet. Seafood is definitely not cheap!
But I figured I’d give it a try and see how possible or impossible it really was.
I was shopping at our local Shoprite at the time. And although their prices are very reasonable, I still just couldn’t seem to make it work. We were running out of food before the next scheduled trip and I was still going over that $500/month budget.
UNTIL…
Walmart Grocery pickup.
Walmart really does have THE BEST prices in town! And if you download their Walmart App they will even make sure you truly are getting the best prices in town. All you have to do is upload your Walmart receipt. Their comuter generators will do the rest of the work for you and scan all the local circulars for better deals on the things you bought. If you happened to pay more at Walmart then it was at Shoprite (or any other local store) that week, Walmart will reimburse you in the form of a Walmart store balance for you to use towards your next trips!
I could write down my list and walk through the aisles of Walmart myself to do our grocery shopping, but I just know that I am an impulse buyer and would still not be able to stick to the budget.
So I just sit down every Tuesday and create my list right online. If I go over my budget I can sit there and decide exactly what I need and what we can do without for the week. Its so much easier and less stressful then standing at the register watching the price go well beyond what you were hoping for and feeling extremely embarrassed if you ask them to take things off or that you don’t actually want to buy the rest of the things on the conveyer belt.
“Send it all back! I’m overbudget!”
Or you buy the things to avoid the embarrassment and then kick yourself the whole way home.
“There goes that pair of shoes I wanted to buy this week, guess we’ll just be eating them instead”
Another great feature is that your app or your account online will save all of your staples. I like to have tortilla wraps, bread, Frozen Pizzas, and some other odds and ends on hand at all times. So when I log in to start my list all I have to do is click add on all of those items that are already saved to my account. Super simple!
And speaking of frozen pizzas…Walmart’s brand “Great Value” pizza is amazing!! Its an average 12″ pizza and only cost $2.78!
Just take a moment to think about that….
The average pizza place around here costs about $9 for a large pizza. As I mentioned before, my family likes to eat. So on Pizza night we would go through at least 2 large pizzas. That’s $18 compared to $5.56! If you have pizza night once a week Walmarts Frozen pizzas would save you an average of $650/year. And that doesn’t include the money you would save from avoiding all of the delivery fees and tips!
My Favorite thing I would have to say, is that they will substitute some of your items that they run out of for better items at the same price that you were originally going to pay.
So, for example, my most recent grocery run I ordered their store brand 40oz jar of Peanut Butter for $2.56. They didn’t have them in stock when they were preparing my order so they replaced it for their brand 4lb tub of peanut butter, which would normally be $4.36, but I got it for the $2.56 price. That’s a win/win for me! 🙂
I also ordered their brand cream cheese. They were out, so they swapped it for Philadelphia brand cream cheese at the same price.
I ordered an 18oz box of frosted mini wheats. They were out so they gave me the 21.5oz for the price of the 18.
I truly believe that Wamart grocery pickup may be the best decision I’ve ever made in my life…Sorry babe
I now spend an average of $125/week and am still able to feed my family the same amount of food that an entire Football team would eat.
And not to mention the added perk of not having to push a cart around the grocery store with a whiny three year old and a couple hungry teenage girls…
The pickup service is FREE!
And the amazing staff that bring your groceries out to you are not allowed to except tips, so you don’t have to feel obligated to do that.
So just to go over how easy and convenient this service is, heres a little shortened list of how it works.
- create you grocery list.
- schedule your pick up time (you have until 1am on the morning of your scheduled pickup to go in and delete or add items OR cancel all together if you decide you need to do that.) Pick up time are in hour long increments. So you can choose 8-9am, 9-10am, 10-11a, etc.
- Walmart will send you a message when your order is ready and you CHECK IN that you are on your way!
- Follow the orange signs that say pick up and Park in one of the designated spaces reserved JUST FOR YOU 🙂
- Once you are there a walkmart associate will receive an alert and make their way out to your car. They will go over any subsittuitons that they made on your order, have you sign and load up your car!
Easy Peasy!!
I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone!! Not just for the conveience but for the amount of money you can save. AND for the high quality store brand items. I am very impressed with the “Great Value” brand. So far we’ve gotten, GV Peanut butter, pizzas, cheese, taco seasoning, dried fruits, jelly, cream cheese, zip lock baggies, waters, black beans, bread and SO MUCH MORE! Great taste Great Value…haha see what I did there.
oh and one last thing…Walmart will give you $10 off if you are a new user spending $50 or more! Just click my link to get started! http://r.wmt.co/kYNTD
Hope some of you give it a try and LOVE it as much as I do!

Heres a few things to take away from this post though.Â
- You’ve got to try Walmart Grocery Pickup at least once! And I’m pretty positive it won’t disappoint!
- Jordan Page from FunCheaporFree.com really is a genius and not just a crazy lady! The impossible $100/month person is indeed possible!Â
Who knew…
