October 2019 Book Review

Its Book review time!!! I’m excited to share my reviews with you all once again this month, however it’s going to be super short and sweet because my brain was in a bit of a fog this month.

We have had so much on our plate this month so my mind is just constantly running and every time I picked up a book I would get distracted with something else.

But I did still read two so check out what I had to say about them and let me know if you have read either one before, I’d love to compare notes.

I started off the month with the first book that came available at the library from my “want to read” list.

The book is called The Breakdown, and I just about had a breakdown reading it.

Have you ever read one of those books that makes you feel slightly dumbed down afterward? This book did that for me.

But it was one that I felt I needed to read to the end, just to see how it went. Honestly kind of hoping for some crazy plot twist to make the book finally come alive for me, but it never did.

Many people on Goodreads gave this book 4 or 5 stars! So I mean I don’t want to encourage you all to not read this one, but I’m just going to give a little bit of my take on it and you can see what ya think. Anyone else here read this one?

I don’t want to give any of the details away but basically this story starts out on a dark rainy night which involves a turn down a dark wooded backroad, a broken down car, a murder, lots of memory loss, creepy phone calls, and a whole lot of immature drama.

I totally get the idea behind it all, it just wasn’t there for me. I felt like the dialogue and the storyline was just…blah…

I really hate giving books bad reviews…I know this author had the best of intentions for it but I just don’t get it..

So needless to say, the next book I chose, I felt had to be a little more educational. So I headed over to Amazon and had “Educated” delivered to my doorstep in a matter of hours. It just seemed like the right time to dive into this one.

Educated is a phenomenal memoir about a girl and her family who’s father made them live life off the grid. With no birth certificates or identification of any kind. No school. No doctors. No medicine.

This was a life that most of the kids grew accustomed to because it was all they knew. They had no desire to go to school….until they did…and then they were all torn between staying true to their father, or venturing out into the unknown and going against everything they were taught to believe in.

The author of the memoir Tara Westover was the youngest of six. She tells such an incredible story about her whole take on this life that they lived. How she eventually became educated. And the extreme guilt she felt as she was growing her education.

This book was definitely a favorite of mine this year. It just blows my mind that people live these lives that seem so foreign to me.

After reading the book I watched an interview with Tara and she talks about how she truly feels that her parents love her but they just had a strange way of showing it. As a bystander and a reader I didn’t see the love there, but its so hard to make opinions on things that we don’t personally experience.

I would highly recommend reading this one and diving into the story of Tara’s childhood and her drive to get the education that every person deserves.

She now has a Ph.D but no high school dimploma or GED which I think is so crazy!

That’s it Ya’ll. I’m so disappointed in the lack of reading I got done this month, but being a travel ball mom that works part time and acts as the bus driver taxi cab to a high school and middle school while dealing with homecoming and concession stand duties just got the best of me this month. Tired is an understatement.

I am currently reading the Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah which I’m hoping will be great because I love Kristin Hannah but so far I’m not getting sucked in like I was hoping.

So that’s it! Please drop a comment below if you have any MUST READ recommendations for me to end out my year! To reach my goal for the year I only have to read 9 books in November and 9 in December. Piece of cake! haha

Make sure to check out the other books I’ve read so far this year!
